MIME Type Lookup
Find the MIME type for any file extension, with IANA status and Content-Type snippets
Search
Search by MIME type, extension, alias or media family. A pasted Content-Type header works too.
Hide types that exist only as Apache, nginx or community conventions.

What is MIME Type Lookup?
MIME Type Lookup finds the media type for a file extension, or the extensions for a media type, and shows how to use it in an HTTP Content-Type header, an HTML file input and a fetch request. Each type is labelled as IANA registered or as a common convention, so you can tell an official type from one that only web servers use.
How searching works
Type an extension (png or .png), a MIME type (image/png), a non-standard alias (image/jpg) or a media family (font). Exact MIME types rank first, then exact extensions, aliases, types that start with your text, and keyword matches. You can paste a whole Content-Type header; parameters such as charset are ignored for the search.
Official types and conventions
Registered types come from the IANA Media Types registry via the mime-db dataset. Extension mappings and unregistered types such as application/x-7z-compressed come from Apache and nginx conventions. One extension can map to several types (.mp4 is both video/mp4 and application/mp4), so the tool lists every match instead of guessing one.
Charset and snippets
The header snippet adds charset=utf-8 only to text types and to JSON, XML or JavaScript types that the dataset marks with a UTF-8 charset. Images, fonts, archives and other binary types never get a charset. Multipart types need a boundary, which FormData adds automatically. Text or binary is inferred from the type name, not from file contents.
Limitations
The lookup describes registered and conventional types; it does not inspect files, so it cannot tell what a file really contains. Server configurations differ, and a file served with the wrong type may still be sniffed or blocked by the browser. The data is bundled with the page and searching never sends anything to a server.
