Choosing a format
PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which suits screenshots, logos, and UI assets. JPEG is lossy without transparency and works best for photos; transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick. WebP supports both lossy compression and transparency and is usually smaller than JPEG or PNG. AVIF can be smaller still, but it is offered only when the browser proves it can encode AVIF.
Limits and browser support
Animated GIFs convert their first frame only. SVG files are sanitized and rasterized at their intrinsic size. AVIF and BMP input depend on the browser’s decoders, and failures are explained per file instead of failing silently. Re-encoding removes metadata such as EXIF, and each file can be up to 50 MB.
