About the WiFi QR Code Generator

Create a QR code that phones and tablets can scan to join a WiFi network. The code uses the widely supported WIFI: text format: the security type, network name, password and hidden flag are written as fields, and the special characters backslash, semicolon, comma, double quote and colon are escaped so the values are read back exactly. Names or passwords made only of hex digits are wrapped in quotes so readers keep them as text. Everything is generated in your browser.

How to use

Enter the network name and password, and turn on Hidden network if the name is not broadcast. WPA/WPA2 is the default. Open Advanced under the network fields to choose an open network, legacy WEP or WPA2-EAP with EAP method, identity, anonymous identity and phase 2 method. Open Advanced in the Options panel to change colours or error correction, or to turn on Show payload, which reveals the encoded text including the password. The preview appears as soon as the required fields are valid; scan it once to test, then download the PNG.

Compatibility and security

Most Android and iOS camera apps join WPA/WPA2, WEP and open networks from these codes, but support for WPA2-EAP fields varies and some devices ignore them; EAP-TLS also needs a certificate or profile installed on the device. Spaces and characters are kept exactly as typed. Anyone who can see or decode the QR code can recover the password, so share printed codes only where network access is intended.
