What is the Endianness Converter?
Endianness is the order in which a multi-byte value is stored: big-endian puts the most significant byte first, little-endian puts it last. This tool takes hex bytes from a packet capture, a hex dump or a protocol spec and shows them with the bytes swapped inside each 16-, 32- or 64-bit word, the whole buffer reversed, and the integer and float values a word represents in both byte orders.
How to use
- 1.Paste hex bytes such as 01 02 03 04, DE:AD:BE:EF or 0x12345678, or load an example.
- 2.Choose the word size: 16-bit, 32-bit or 64-bit.
- 3.Copy the swapped or reversed bytes from the output.
- 4.Pick a word under Word values to read it as big-endian and little-endian numbers.
Swap each word or reverse the buffer?
They are different operations. With 32-bit words, 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 becomes 04 03 02 01 08 07 06 05 when each word is swapped, but 08 07 06 05 04 03 02 01 when the whole buffer is reversed. Use the per-word swap to convert an array of integers between byte orders; reverse the buffer only when the entire byte sequence was written backwards.
Strict input
Every byte needs two hex digits, and invalid characters are reported with their position. When the byte count is not a multiple of the word size, the swap is not shown and nothing is padded, because padding would change the data. The full-buffer reversal stays available. Conversion runs in your browser.
